In between the ripe, blossoming energy of the Spring and the quick, cooling energy of Fall, the heat of Summer lends itself to languishing a bit – doesn’t it? The slower pace of the Summer is a perfect time to experiment with different ways to be productive. It’s harder to push when it’s so hot, so why not try another way?
This is the first in a three part series of teachings on how to get it all done without driving yourself into the ground. My stand is that the highly stressed way is antiquated; we are ready for a better way to operate where we thrive in mind, body, and spirit. Your physical and mental well-being doesn’t have to suffer for your bank account.
We are generally taught (in the West) that hard is better. We push, we strive for (from the french root quarrel or dispute), we say “no pain no gain.” For most of us, this is standard operating procedure, and we have done all of life like this. And it works, this push, this grinding through life. Until it doesn’t, because we burnout, we lose motivation, we get sick. We might receive the blessing in disguise of getting fired or let go. And then, finally, we have a chance to rest.
The constant push and pedal-to-the metal attitude is in direct conflict with our natural rhythms. Like the seasons of the year, like the waves in the ocean, our physical and energy bodies have cycles, pulses, waves. Inside these waves is the information for how to do your own life optimally: what project is next and when to start it, what way of working brings you the most ease and pleasure (and thus success), what is your zone of genius and how can you get paid for it.
Here’s the secret: what brings you pleasure, ease, and delight will take you to your highest, most purposeful, most successful expression of your humanity. All you have to do is listen.
One of my favorite ways to practice listening to the wise inner compass, is to dance! When we dance, we have a chance to listen our bodies, and our bodies are one of the the gateways to our spirit. So click below, and dance with me. If we are not having fun along the way, we are not doing it right!
